Holiday Mail

SOUTHWEST ASIA – Senior Airman Landon Wagner, a volunteer from the 379th Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron and native of Cleveland, lifts a package while unloading a cargo truck here December 21, 2011. The 379th Expeditionary Communications Squadron Mail Control Activity processed more than 48,000 pounds of mail December 19-20, just in time for the holiday season. AirmanWagner was deployed from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sergeant Nathanael Callon)

Photographers Narrative

Everyone likes to get mail while they are deployed, especially in the winter, when families back home get together to celebrate the holidays and share gifts with the ones they love.  It is sometimes difficult to be away during that time of the year, but at the same moment, deployed locations often see the largest volume of mail than any other time.  The 379th Expeditionary Communications Squadron post office relies on volunteers to help unload truckloads of mail and sort them for each unit on base. The trucks often arrive by 1 a.m., and many volunteers have already worked a long day and still help unload the trucks.  This struck me as a very special moment, knowing that fellow Airmen care enough to sacrifice their own time for the joy that another may find inside a care package of presents, cookies, or other holiday cheer.
