Service Beyond Self

by SSgt Vernon Young Jr.

A military member coaches youth in a team huddle, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Military members coach dependants in various sports throughout the year as a way to give back to their military community.  Often civilians come into basic training as followers, but leave as leaders. Photographers Narrative

I always seek opportunities to tell a unique story through imagery.  For many service members, the wear of more than a decade of war and countless deployments is evident in both their physical and emotional scars.  However, no one should doubt the resiliency of today’s Airmen.  Like the coach of the Lackland Youth Center flag football team, many Airmen continue their dedicated service both at home and abroad.  Their commitment to the Nation extends to their community, where they continue to have a positive impact on the future.  It’s a futile venture to attempt to capture that level of dedication in a single image.
