Newly arrived Air Force Academy appointees stand on "the footprints" for their first real test as cadets at the Air Force Academy in Colorado, June 27, 2014. The cadet cadre bombard the basic cadets with question, corrections and distractions, testing their ability to think under pressure. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Andrew Lee)

Photographer's Narrative

When I was shooting the process of new cadets coming into the Air Force Academy, they stop at “the footprints,” which is a very well-known part of the introduction to the academy. It’s an initial test where they get yelled at and get overwhelmed with instructions. Before the chaos, I saw two new cadets next to each other wearing camo and U.S. Flag shorts. They just stood out and it was kind of ironic, so I took the photograph.
