Airman 1st Class Kenneth Bell, 31st Communications Squadron postal clerk, handwrites notification of delivery for incoming boxes, Nov. 25, 2014, at Aviano Air Base, Italy. During the holiday season, volunteer postal workers are needed to ensure on-time delivery. Volunteers can expect to sort, pitch, process and hand out parcels to customers after an initial orientation briefing. To volunteer this season, U.S. citizens can sign up in person or on the 31 CS SharePoint website. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Ryan Conroy)

Photographer's Narrative

This was another one of those shoots where you’re forced to find a unique way to highlight a certain unit. This was during the holidays at Aviano Air Base when packages were coming in faster than they could be sorted, and they were looking for extra help. My job was to get the word out and communicate the need for more volunteer postal clerks, so I figured a different-looking shot at the postal office would help spread the message. The lighting was dim and uninteresting, so I decided to make my own. For this I put a portable flash unit on the top rack of packages and pointed it straight down to make the postal clerk, who was sorting, look almost like a savior helping get packages to Airmen who were far away from home.
