Gordon Cooper Launch

AF Art Collection (1963.026) by Robert McCall

About The Art Piece

This painting is a celebration of the launch of the longest (and final) Mercury spaceflight mission in 1963. Pilot Gordon Cooper was an Air Force officer – ultimately a Colonel – the first American to sleep in space, and the last to be launched alone to conduct a solo orbital mission. The Launch is an aspirational work representing a program and domain marked by dedication, perseverance, service and excellence… and representative of the unique sacrifices and opportunities presented by our Profession of Arms.
