Firefighters from the 628th Civil Engineer Squadron train during a controlled burn on Joint Base Charleston, S.C., Oct. 6, 2011. The squadron uses controlled burns to simulate a burning C-17 in order to prepare the men and women for future fire challenges, whether that requires physically entering a burning C-17 or from a fire truck.  (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Jodi Martinez/Released)

Photographer's Narrative

Every shoot is a learning experience and for me; shooting these firefighters was a big one. Due to safety, I couldn’t get near the fire, so I had to look for other ways to make creative images. As a firefighter walked behind the fire, I noticed how he was waving back and forth because of the heat. The heat caused a good effect, which made for a good photo.
